FAQ for Our Immigrant Families

Q: Does Franklin Township Public Schools (FTPS) ask for a child’s immigration status when the child enrolls?

A: No. All public school districts have an obligation to enroll students regardless of their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin. FTPS staff does not ask for immigration status.

Q: Will Franklin Township Public Schools (FTPS) share a child’s immigration status with federal immigration officials?

A. No. If the district becomes aware of the student's immigration status, the information is not shared.

Q: How will the district respond if an immigration enforcement official comes to my child's school?

A: The district has reviewed current guidance and will respond by asking the immigration enforcement official to present identification and paperwork concerning their visit. Their documents will be forwarded to members of the central office staff who will ask legal counsel to determine if the documents are valid and how the district should respond. During that time the immigration enforcement official will be asked to wait and will not be given access to any students, student families, staff members or student records.

Q: If I am a parent or guardian and I am worried about being detained while my child is at school, what should I do?

A: The district encourages all families to keep their emergency-contact information update in the Genesis Parent Portal. This way if you are delayed for any reason, we can reach the appropriate person to assist your child.

Q: What should I do if I want to understand my immigration rights?

A: Only immigration attorneys can provide you with accurate advice about immigration status and how you can pursue any legal rights you may have. For your own protection, please seek the advice of a licensed immigration attorney. Please see our resources page.
